This hard-hitting, psychologically-perceptive film, describes several aspects of the author’s life and work, including his relationship to his parents and family; his psychoanalytical encounters with Dr. Hans Kleinschmidt, made famous through the author’s book, Portnoy’s Complaint; his two marriages; early schooling; college years, all while revisiting a magical historical Newark.

Interviewed are childhood school friends, and scholars who describe the historical period Roth was born into and grew up in; the traumas and events that influenced his work; the distinctions and honors he received; and finally, the literary legacy he left when he died.
